ST.XAVIER'S COLLEGE

Department of Criminology and Forensic Science

About The Department

Department of Criminology and Forensic Science was established in the year 2023, with the aim of advancing Criminological studies and imparting knowledge of forensic science to students. The St.Xavier’s College, as an outstanding Jesuit Institution is committed to making Criminological studies accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic background, particularly focusing on rural and marginalised students, thus breaking the stereotype of criminology as an exclusive discipline for the privileged.

The curriculum offers advanced subjects designed to explore the significance of criminological research, the nature of crime, social and legal dimensions of criminality, interdisciplinary approaches, forensic science applications, and practical hands-on training using modern techniques and equipped labs. The meticulously crafted syllabus equips students for diverse career paths within Research Institutions, Police Departments, Forensic Science Experts, Private Detective Agencies, International and National NGOs, State and Central Government Service Commissions, and Uniformed Services.

The inception of this Department was fueled by a strong aspiration, endorsed by the esteemed Rector of St. Xavier’s Institution, Rev. Fr. Dr. V. Henry Jerome, an eminent scholar in Cybercrime who serves as the first coordinator. This vision was supported and championed by Rev. Fr. Dr. G. Pushparaj, S.J., Secretary, and Rev. Fr. Dr. S. Mariadoss, S.J., Principal of St Xavier’s College. Leading the Department as its founding Head i/c is Dr. G. Shunmuga Sundaram.

To encourage active participation and foster leadership skills, the department established Criminology and Forensic Science Association, enabling students to engage in voluntary roles, organize seminars, invite guest lectures, and coordinate events for their personal and professional growth. In near future, we will create post graduation and research institutes in criminological studies.
